The US wants to delete predators. DOPA. How embaressing for them.
My suggestions for our networked colleagues in the USA:
- Leave the USA, seek refuge.
- Homeschooling
- Daily excursions to the local Internet cafe
- Start a community wireless project
- Assign censorship and hacking as in class activity, and traditional curriculum for homework
- See my posts realating to filtering and security in Australia

Chomsky does it better but Lewis captures the nonsense of this in “Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.” C S Lewis

And so we head down the road to fundamentalism, totalitarianism, and old fashioned busybodyism. Thanks Artichoke. Really, I’m not too worked up about this – just have the time during the end of my summer break to squawk about the ignorance of people in charge of things they don’t understand. Leigh, I had a good laugh looking at the DOPA Talk page you pointed to. There’s a little feud going on there.
The most embarrassing thing about this whole situation is the acronym for the bill comes close to summing up the mentality of the sponsors to it, and they don’t seem to notice. I sent a letter off to one of my two senators for all the good it might do. The other senator is Ted Stevens, recently famous for his series of tubes speech and all of the internet humor it generated. I’m not going to write to Ted because it might confuse him.
The other solutions you propose, I’ll keep in mind, thanks.
