I’m back in Wellington (wish I had frequent fliers set up) for a meeting to discuss a proposed review of the NZ Unit Standards of Open and Distance Learning. The main thing I have picked up from the proposal documents that were sent out prior was that some people would like a name change to “eLearning”. Otago Poly, my colleagues and I are opposed to such a name change, and without hearing the detailed concerns in the proposal, kind of feel that the Units are good and usable still. There are a few minor word changes I think I’d like to see happen – semantic really. If anyone wants to IM me in Skype or Gtalk while I’m here today, I’ll convey any thoughts and ideas from you đ

The definition “Open and distance learning is an approach to learning which emphasises flexibility and accessibility in order to maximise opportunities for learners in terms of choice regarding who can access learning, what is learned, where it is learned, when it is learned, how it is learned, and if, when, and how learning is assessed. ODL is typically characterised by the diverse use of learning strategies, with increasing emphasis on computer and telecommunications technologies as learning tools.” (in the standard) sits well with the people I work with here @ UCTL (sample of 3).
Inclusive. Open. I’m not sure e-learning has a common understanding that I can live with. đ
For some it is LESS open.
Good luck with the meeting.
